A Good Man Is Hard to Find

But one spoke last night, at the Democratic National Convention.

Obama: His policies, his sharp but easy delivery, and mostly his spilling sense of humanity.  A champion, indeed.

Watch him and read the speech:

Good Soul

I first encountered Marlena Shaw when my roommate loaned me David Holmes' Essential Mix 98/01 last week. Her song, "California Soul," is number 3 on the first CD. My roommate gave me her albums "Out of Different Bags" and "Spice of Life" when I gushed.

Soul jazzist lady of the '60s and beyond and now, Shaw has a voice that is smoky, like taffy, sexy, and good sleazy. "Ease, authority, wit, and unerring taste" is a phrase in her liner notes.

I like this essay about her:

I'd like to buy this (No. 12) for a lot of people I know:

A Good Catch

I joined a softball team three weeks ago.

We count off into two teams, play with no ball or strike count, however many innings we feel, spend most of our time joshing the ball in the outfield. We go to our sponsor, the bar, afterward.

I play right field because there's not action and I'm not skilled. Yesterday I was idling, looking at park trees and liking the sun.  A boy hit a high ball toward me.

I can't report processing: Ball coming, I must get under, I'm nervous, oh. I just know that I caught it, it was high and it made a solid smack into my mitt.  The outfield boys looked in surprise. It was my first catch.

Another good catch, more famous than mine:
