Good Soul

I first encountered Marlena Shaw when my roommate loaned me David Holmes' Essential Mix 98/01 last week. Her song, "California Soul," is number 3 on the first CD. My roommate gave me her albums "Out of Different Bags" and "Spice of Life" when I gushed.

Soul jazzist lady of the '60s and beyond and now, Shaw has a voice that is smoky, like taffy, sexy, and good sleazy. "Ease, authority, wit, and unerring taste" is a phrase in her liner notes.
